Tourist Spots in Wenzhou
As a coastal city, Wenzhou is rich in natural resources. The long coastline gives the city abundant marine resources and many beautiful islands. Wenzhou also boasts wonderful landscapes with rugged mountains and tranquil waters, including three state-level scenic spots, namely Yandang Mountain, Nanxi River, Baizhangji Fall and Feiyun Lake, and two national nature reserves, Wuyanling Nature Reserve and Nanji Island. Scenice areas accounts for 25% of Wenzhou’s land space, which is a perfect integration of exotic mountains, tender water and charming sea.
Located in Yongjia County of Wenzhou, Nanxi River Scenic Area is adjacent to Yandang Mountain. With its leisurely atmosphere and picturesque scenery, it is an ideal place for holiday and leisure and is praised as the Cradle of Landscape Painting of China. The area is a perfect combination of natural views, rural scenery and human landscape. It is famous for its water, rocks, waterfalls, ancient villages and shoals, and there are over 800 scenic spots dotting in the area. Generally speaking, the scenic area can be divided into several parts with Nanxi River, Daruoyan Rock and Shiwei Rock enjoying the most popularity. Meanwhile, some ancient villages in the area, including Cangpo Village, Furong Village and Yantou Town etc, are places visitors can not miss, as the villages retain their ancient style and show splendid culture.
Take Cangpo Village for example, sitting in the area of Nanxi River in Yantou Town, Yongjia County, Cangpo Village has a history dating back to the Song Dynasty. Although hundreds of years have passed, the walls, houses, paths, pavilions, temples and pools in the village still retain their ancient style, maintaining much of its original layout. Cangpo Village is essentially a single family name village, settled and subsequently developed by a population all claiming the family name Li. For the layout of the village as a whole, it also features the ancient eight-diagram-structured lanes and streets.
Sitting in the middle reaches of the Oujiang River in north Wenzhou, Jiangxin Islet covers an area of about 70,000 square meters. The beautiful scenery and the abundant cultural and historical relics make the island a bright pearl on the Oujiang River. It is one of the four most renowned islets in China, for which many famous Chinese poets in the ancient China came to the island and left numerous great poems about this unique island.
The island is covered with various kinds of old trees, many of which have been on the island for hundreds of years. The main buildings on the island include Jiangxin Temple, Wen Tianxiang Memorial Hall and two pagodas called East Pagoda and West Pagoda. Jiangxin Temple was rebuilt in 1789 and still reserves many historical relics, including a bell dating back to the Song Dynasty and a pagoda built more than one thousand years ago. Wen Tianxiang Memorial Hall was built in memory of Wenzhou Tianxiang, who was a famous national hero as well as a well-known poet in the Song Dynasty. The most eye-catching buildings on the islet are two ancient pagodas, East Pagoda and West Pagoda, which can be seen from both sides of the Oujiang River. Both pagodas have a long history dating back to hundreds of years ago.
On the west part of the island, there is a waterpark with different water play facilities, making it a good choice for fun in summer.
Dongtou Islands, one of 14 island areas in China, covers a total area of 892.3 square kilometers, including a land area of 119.9 square kilometers, with a total population of 127,000. Located outside the Oujiang River estuary, Dongtou Islands is reputed as a hundred-island county. Besides Dongtou Island, the main island of Dongtou District, some big islands in this area include Daqu Island, Dazhu Island, Banping Island and Damen Island etc.
Dongtou Islands features great sea views and elegant mountain landscapes with a mild climate, grotesque rocks, pleasant beaches, reefs, caves as well as a variety of fishes and birds. It is a great seaside resort for fishing, marine sports and sunbathing. Dongtou District has more than 400 scenic spots with their own unique features. The main scenic areas include Banping Mountain, Xiandie Rock, Haizhong Lake (lake in the sea), Wanghai Pavilion, Dongsha, Middle Putuo Temple etc.
Regarded as the First Mountain of Southeast China, Yandang Mountain is one of the ten most famous mountains in China, rising 1,150 meters high in Yueqing City, twenty-five kilometers from Wenzhou. In Chinese, Yandang means reed marsh for wild geese and in autumn wild geese do gather in the marshes around the lake at the top of the mountain. Composed of North Yandang, Middle Yandang and South Yandang, the mountain was formed some 120 million years ago, and is regarded by scientists as a natural museum of great historic and scientific significance.
Yandang Mountain is well known for its various wonders. Its natural landscapes are unusual, unexpected and changeable, mainly being exhibited by the peculiar shape of rhyolites, the combination of various excellent peaks, screen-like mountain peaks, caves, waterfalls and deep pools, which can evoke travelers' strong sense of beauty and spirit. In addition, there are still the magnificence of Yanhu Hill, Longqiu Peak, the dangers of ravines and plank roads along cliffs, the elegance of brooks and streams, the seclusion and mystery of Chuyue Gorge, Mingyu Stream, Ling Rock etc. Yandang Mountain has various water landscapes such as brooks, springs, ravines, ponds, waterfalls, rivers, lakes, swamps and oceans etc.
Furthermore, Yandang Mountain has rich historical and cultural connotation: The development of Yandang Mountain began from the Tang Dynasty in the seventh century and prospered in the Song Dynasty in thirteenth century. For centuries, a great deal of historic culture has been accumulated. In the Song Dynasty, there were famous eighteen ancient temples. After that, with the rebuilding of hill roads and the renovation of temples, travelers began to visit Yandang Mountain and left many poems and inscriptions. In the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty, this continued to develop. More and more poets, painters and writers are illuminated by the large scale peculiar landscapes of Yandang Mountain and left a large amount of work.
Located in Qiaodun Town of Cangnan County in Wenzhou, Wanyao Village, voted as one of the most beautiful villages in Zhejiang Province, sits on a slope beside the picturesque Yulong Lake. The village has a long history of producing bowls, which dated back to the Ming Dynasty. The bowls made here once were sold around the country and enjoyed a great fame, especially in the Qing Dynasty.
As it is quite isolated from the outside world in location, Wanyao Village still retains its ancient style with ancient kilns, temples, opera stages, water-powered hammers. On the foot of the mountain stand more than 300 Qing-style houses, which represent typical residential buildings in Southern Zhejiang Province in the ancient time. The village neighbors brooks, waterfalls, forests and valleys, and especially the three-step waterfall is the most eye-catching. In the village, visitors can watch the whole process of bowl making and try making their own bowls.
Situated in a township called Zeya in the west part of Wenzhou, Zeya Scenic Area covers an area of 130 square kilometers. As a picturesque mountainous area, it combines great lakes, splashing waterfalls, limpid ponds, quiet valleys, grotesque rocks with a simple village life. There are more than 200 scenic spots dotting on different mountains. Since the area is endowed with great valleys, it is one of the best places in Wenzhou for rafting. In addition, this area has a long history of paper production, and the local villagers still use the ancient paper-making technology to make paper, which has been passed down since the Song Dynasty.
Nanji Island is the main island of a group of 15 islands and islets, situated in the south-eastern waters of Pingyang County, Wenzhou in south-east China. This was the first marine/coastal biosphere reserve in China. The 28 km long coastline consists of exposed bedrock and sharp cliffs, bays and islets. The biosphere reserve offers a multitude of diverse marine habitats which host a rich number of shellfish and algae species. Fifteen of the identified 403 species of shellfish have been found only in the Nanji waters. The shellfish and algae are intermittently distributed in the tropical and temperate marine realms, which makes this species-rich site even more important for conservation and scientific research. These species are concentrated in the core areas, which consist of two islets and a portion of Nanji Island and their surrounding waters, with an area of 663 hectares. The total area, including the transition area, is 20,629 hectares.
Nanji Island can be divided into three scenic zones, namely Dashaao, Sanpanwei and Zhuyubaiyu. The beach at Dashaao is 800 meters wide and 600 meters long with clear water and white sand, making it a good place for sunbathing and swimming.
Located in Wencheng County in the southwestern part of Wenzhou, Baizhangji Scenic Area is especially famous for its beautiful lakes and splendid waterfalls, which are divided into three sections from high to low like three steps. The first section called First Waterfall is of 207 meters high and known as number one waterfall in China. When the water runs vertically down from the cliff high above, you can see the beads splashing and hear a sound like thunder. Looking around, mountains rise above the water, some like a lanneret spreading its wings, some like a rock tower and some like a sail on the water. The second section, about 85 meters high, is called Second Waterfall, and it is divided into two folds by a rock in the middle, like a waistband twining around the sable cliff. Here, the waterfall runs down like a curtain. Below, is the third section called Third Waterfall which is 12 meters high with the mouth more than 80 meters wide. The three waterfalls are quite impressive and unique.
Besides the splendid waterfalls, Baizhangji features picturesque mountains, grotesque rocks, caves and lake views. Also, visitors can not miss a great name, Liu Ji, who was a great politician and strategist in the Ming Dynasty. Born in Wencheng County, he helped the first Ming emperor found the new dynasty.
Wuyanling National Nature Reserve is a nature reserve located in the northwest of Taishun County in Wenzhou. The reserve occupies a mountainous, forested area with the highest peak named Baiyun Peak, 1,611 meters high. Covering an area of 200 square kilometres, it protects the forest ecology as well as wild life to be a heaven for numerous wild plants and animals. Many of the plants and animals living in the reserve are considered endangered and require protection, including maire yew, bretschneidera sinensis, leopard and stump-tailed monkey etc. The most famous animal in this forest is Cabot's Tragopan, a unique and beautiful bird of particular conservation value which can only be found in Wuyanling National Nature Reserve.
A small part of the reserve is developed as a tourist area and the rest is still not accessible to the general public. Now visitors are able to follow a paved path to the Baiyun Peak.
Located in Rui’an City in the southern part of Wenzhou, Zhailiao Stream Scenic Area covers a total area of 174.8 square kilometers and includes nine scenic spots, such as Nine-Pearl Ponds, the Flower Crag, Fairy Valley and Jimen Stream etc. The area features pellucid brooks, beautiful valleys, splashing waterfalls, grotesque rocks, thick forests and deep caves, dotted with ancient temples, villages and wartime sites. Among them, rafting at Jimen Stream is the most exciting to travelers. Nine-Pearl Ponds sits in the valley surrounded by thick forests on both sides with nine ponds like a string of nine pearls connecting one another, making a splendid view. The Flower Crag has thick forests with the forest coverage rate reaching more than 90%. Dongyuan Village, a small village in this area, is the only place in China still preserving and using the age-old wooden moveable-type printing technique, which is considered a living fossil of printing technology.
With a total area of 13.5 square kilometers, Yaoxi Scenic Area is located in Longwan District in east Wenzhou, about 16 kilometers from the downtown and 4 kilometers from the airport. Yaoxi gets its name from the view that most brooks and rocks are jade green. As a part of Daluo Mountain, this area features limpid streams, deep valleys, grotesque rocks and steep cliffs. Yaoxi Scenic Area has five major scenic spots, including Yaoxi Rapids, Zhongxiu Orchard, Longgang Hill, Qianfo Tower and Qingshan Lake. Besides the beautiful natural scenery, Yaoxi Scenic Area also has many historical sites which are of great scientific value. For example, Yongchang Castle, once used for defending Japanese invaders in the Ming Dynasty, preserves many ancient buildings and ancestral temples, including the ancestral homes of some famous politicians and scholars in the Ming Dynasty.
